Writing Coach

Daniel Ryu

Daniel and his parents immigrated to the US from Korea when he was 7 years old, landing in Manhattan, Kansas. He was an ESL student. Several years later, he was sitting for an interview with National Public Radio for placing 1st in a national writing competition. He later became an American citizen during his first semester at Yale Law School, after getting a masters in philosophy from Oxford.

As someone who watched his parents struggle for years through visas and bureaucracy, Daniel knows that college is a privilege worth every penny. He is deeply passionate about education access for non-traditional applicants and has worked extensively with both domestic and international students. In other moments, he has volunteered at under-resourced schools, taught adult literacy, worked at a New York City law firm, and at the Virginia Attorney General's Office and Department of Education.

Daniel believes that an applicant's writing is the best chance they have to distinguish themselves in a sea of high GPAs and test scores. As a professional writer for 7Sage, he's seen dozens of people get into their dream schools through creative and memorable essays, even those they thought were out of reach. Teens face enormous pressures when applying to college. That's why Daniel aims to make this journey a fun, reflective process for his students, not a gauntlet.
